Second Thoughts About My Mormon Mission

In 1963, I graduated from East Lansing High School (Michigan), a white-bread community far removed from reality. I then attended Michigan State University for a year. After completing my first year of college, I signed up for a Mormon mission and received a call to the Franco-Belgian Mission. At the time, I didn’t have a testimony and during my 2-1/2 years in Europe, I never really developed one.

But I have always had a very positive feeling about my missionary experience. In the 1960s, the LDS Church in France and Belgium was in disarray for several reasons including European indifference to religion, a fundamentalist scandal in the French Mission, swimming-pool baptisms, and missionary ineptitude Many missionaries returned home without baptizing anyone.

I loved living in France and Belgium. And I took the opportunity to learn about French history, literature, culture, etc. I enjoyed the small local museums and did a little unauthorized traveling. In other words, I was not a proto-typical “good” missionary who obeyed all the rules. But I always considered my time well spent, until this last weekend.

At work, I’m required to get 4 hours of diversity training every year. This year, we can get 2 hours of credit if we attend “This Light of Ours: Activist Photographers of the Civil Rights Movement” now showing (May 2012) at the Leonardo Museum in downtown SLC. So last Saturday I made a pilgrimage to the Leonardo and “witnessed” what was transpiring in the southeastern USA while I was in Europe.

The exhibit contains numerous black-and-white photographs and brief explanations of what transpired in the mid-60s related to the civil rights movement. Many of the photographs are much more emotionally stirring than I had anticipated. They gave me an opportunity to reflect on my time as a missionary.

A Civil Rights Protest in 1964

While I was futilely tracting in Belgium and France, blacks in America were fighting for their basic rights, and things were sometimes ugly:

1963–In August, more than 200,000 people march on Washington D.C., the largest civil rights demonstration ever, and Martin Luther King Jr., gives his “I Have a Dream” speech.
1964–SNCC, CORE and the NAACP organize a massive African American voter registration drive in Mississippi known as “Freedom Summer.” At the start of the summer, three CORE civil rights workers are murdered. In the five years following Freedom Summer, black voter registration in MS rises from 7 to 67 percent.
1965–When SNCC voter registration efforts falter in Selma, Dr. King organizes a protest march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, for African American voting rights. In the wake of the march, the Voting Rights Act is passed, outlawing practices used in the South to disenfranchise African-American voters.
1966–Stokely Carmichael, chairman of SNCC, calls for “black power”in a speech, ushering in a more militant civil rights stance.

There were more important places for me to be spending 2-1/2 of my formative years than on a Mormon mission. For example, I could have been registering voters in Mississippi. Or, at least, helping to alleviate some of the black poverty in the South. I started to have second thoughts about my mission. Particularly since the LDS Church at the time still had a discriminatory policy toward blacks.

My time in Belgium and France turned me into a francophile. Not all together a bad thing. And during my missionary sojourn, I did get a chance to reflect on my own religious beliefs. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your point of view), France converted me, I didn’t convert France. For example, I came to appreciate the writing of Albert Camus, a french existentialist, or should I say absurdist.

Did I enjoy my mission, Yes. Could I have been more productive doing something else, Sure. But I’ve never been one to obsess of opportunities lost.

PS. I wish the LDS Church had chosen to be a sponsor of the Leonardo civil rights exhibit. It would have been an excellent opportunity to demonstrate that things have changed in the Church.

Association Financial Summary

As of the end of May, 2012, the MTA has $5,410 total cash on hand with $706 in the endowment.

Our 2012 conference cost the association $3,144 beyond the participant registration fees of $440. The majority of the conference expenses went to travel reimbursement for voting members of the association for whom the association paid half of personal travel expenses. In total, the association reimbursed members $2,295 for travel to the conference.

Is the New Testament a Parable?

A recent post by BHodges on bycommonconsent.com reviewed the book The Power of Parable: How Fiction by Jesus Became Fiction about Jesus. In the book, the author John Dominic Crossan wonders if the four gospels are parables? According to Hodges’ review:

. . . [Crossan] makes the unique argument that the four gospels (combining Acts with Luke) . . . are parables about Jesus, or “megaparables” as he calls them. He suggests the gospels, as with Jesus’s stories, are carefully designed stories intended to subvert social expectations and prompt self-reflection about the risen Christ. . . .

His retorical leverage for concluding the gospels are parables is two-fold: first, he explores Hebrew Bible examples of book-length parables in Ruth, Jonah, and Job to argue that such megaparables weren’t unheard of. Second, he . . . approaches the sticky question of historicity using the example of Caesar’s crossing of the Rubicon. He explores historical sources on Caesar’s famous crossing, [as a possible] mixture of fact and possible fiction.

. . . [Crossan] examines the four gospels in turn, concluding that, based on the historical communities to which each writer directed their works, they selectively shaped the story of Jesus’s life to emphasize their own agendas. . .

Most Christians suspect that much in the OT is either metaphor or parable, and not to be taken literally. And as Crossan has pointed out, there are also issues with the NT. Mormons have similar issues with the First Vision and the Book of Mormon. Everybody with faith has to grapple with tough issues related to the doctrine they chose to believe in. As science, history, anthropology, archeology, etc. progress in their knowledge of the past, we will all need to personally deal with what is metaphor and what is parable in our belief system.

Exile

The truth which will be first and last, how to show it? Is there any equation to determine the truth? Will you be subject only to the way our neural networks interpret it? But do they play? What the reason why there are all the phenomena presented to us daily, that is in the universe and that are and are not observable, but they exist? How do perceive this truth?How do the find? quien puede responder las preguntas que nos hacemos a diario sobre los diferentes conceptos de la verdad, realidades, fenomenos, criterios, y suena algo excretable lo que podran decir algunos maestros, que todo es efimero, superfluo, simple, cambiante, es decir, la realidad existe porque nuestros sentidos lo percibe, mas no porque en verdad sea cierto, sea tangible. La verdad primera y ultima cual sera, ¿como demostrarla? ¿existe alguna ecuacion que determine la verdad? ¿estara sujeta solo a la forma como nuestras redes neuronales la interpreten? ¿pero que interpretan? ¿que observa?, ello no implica que innecesariamente nosostros busquemos un bosquejo esquematico que determine un factor unico por el cual se entiende y se llegue a comprender la unidad, la totalidad, el porque, y el para que.

¿A que llamariamos verdad?, ¿a un fenomeno? ¿ a la razon por la cual existen todos los fenomenos que se nos presenta a diario, que esta en el universo y que son y no son observables, pero que existen? ¿como percibiriamos esta verdad? ¿como la encontrariamos? ¿por medio de ideas, palabras, poesia, ritos, sublimaciones, cantos, mantras, drogas, aparatos? si es un fenomeno material, debe ser encontrado como un fenomeno material,es decir por medio del metodo cientifico, lo otro seria la forma como nosotros podamos interpretar dicho fenomeno, dicha interpretacion seria mas encausada hacia las artes, la sublimacion misma de la realidad y como nosotros podamos recrearla, hacerla bella, por eso creo ciertamente que la religion y la espiritualidad, mas que una ciencia que se enfoca al estudio de la deidad y del theos, esta orientada a la recreacion y la forma como nosotros podamos interpretar los diferentes fenomenos y sucesos de nuestra vida, es la forma como nosotros podemos llegar a sentir, y a vivir en medio de este mundo. Se sabe a ciencia cierta que los comportamientos, los pensamientos, las ideas, las concepciones son solo factores quimicos que esta en el cerebro, que se activa por la forma como nosotros asociamos los recuerdos, y como dicha asociacion genera estimulos que estan asignados a un determinado punto del cerebro, el aprendizaje no es como tal, la memorizacion, es la forma como nosotros sentimos el conocimiento y dicha forma hace que genere un estimulo que interpredado por codigos que estan dentro del adn y la mitocondria de la neurona, activando niveles de aceticolina, sodio, potasio, cloro, calcio, noradrenalina, esto conlleva a que los botones sipnaticos de la neurona reciba y entrege dichos quimicos, que al darlos y recibirlos estimulan un patron, sea conductual, motor, sentimental, operativo, logico, entre otros. ¿Porque tocar la neurologia cuando toco el tema de la verdad?, simplemente porque de ella, de la forma como nuestras neuronas conciben la realidad, es que parte la verdad, porque de nuestra neurona, en la misma forma que un escritor hace una hermosa novela, o un basquebolista realiza una fabulosa canasta, es que se recrea nuestro mundo y nuestro universo, es simplemente de ella, ¿no saben que gran parte de las personas que tienen visiones y revelaciones, o teofanias, tiene indicios de epilepsia? ¿porque sera? ¿no saben que los grandes visionarios, lideres espirituales, profetas y martiles, de todas partes tienen TOC o transtorno obsesivo compulsivo? ¿no saben que los sentimientos de gracia, de paz, de avivamiento, de visiones, son dados por desordenes en los niveles de serotonina y dopamina que genera el cerebro? ¿ha visto que la mayoria de los seres humanos depositan o ubican el alma, el atman, el espiritu, u otra cosa sobre natural, en la cabeza? ¿porque se drogaban la mayoria de las culturas para tener viajes y encontrar a los antiguos espiritus, a los maestros de luz, a la gran fraternidad blanca, roja, cafe, o multicolor, a los maestros ascendidos, a los grande swamis, a los rajas, a los apostoles, a los angeles o los grandes espiritus, sean del fuego, del cielo, de la tortuga y de la rata? simplemente por la manipulacion de los diferentes estados de conciencia, que son regulados por el sistema nervioso central, y por la bioquimica que ello genera, por eso le llamo arte a la religion, porque es la forma como nosotros recreamos los fenomenos, las ideas, las normas, la etica, la doctrina.

La verdad en si, es un factor de interpretacion, mientras para unos la pregunta sería ¿porque estamos aca? para otros sería ¿para que estamos aca?, en la primera el proposito sería si alguien de afuera nos puso a vivir como somos (animales conciencientes) porque nos puso, es decir el motivante seria externo, mientras en la segunda el motivante es, ya que estamos aca, para que existimos, es decir, cual es nuestro objetivo, el motivante sería interno el hombre. Es un factor de interpretacion ya que nosotros, (por medio de nuestro sistema nervioso central) observamos, percibimos nuestra realidad, segun nuestra formacion, ideas y experiencias de ella; vemos que existen leyes universales, como la gravedad (ley fisica), como el hambre (el hambre es una ley biologica), pero tambien segun nuestra percepcion recreamos leyes que parte de las dos anteriores, como la sociales, las de convivencia, las economicas, las administrativas. Tanto las leyes fisicas que son relativas segun el momento, el lugar y las circustancia en donde este la materia, y las biologicas o quimicas que dependen de los mismos factores de la fisica, como las humanas, estan sujetas a nuestra percepcion, y a las forma como las concebimos; ¿entonces como podemos entender la verdad? todo es interpretacion y recreacion, nosotros los hombres tenemos la capacidad de hacer con ellas lo que queramos, tanto para bien como para mal, es tanto, entrando a un punto mucho mas profundo y quimerico podemos decir que todo es energia y vacio, ahora, si todo es energia (pensamientos, ideas, órganos, sucesos, calor solar, arena del mar, mama, papa, orgasmos, dioses y diosas, todo) podemos llegar a la conclusion de que la enerigia, la misma que genera calor, la que mueve el auto, la que nos da vitalidad en una maraton, es ella la que genera pensamientos, fenomenos sociales, factores economicos, ires y devenires, entonces teniendo en cuenta ello, podemos llegar a un factor fundamental, ¿la verdad no es en si la forma como dicha energia se manifiesta y se recrea y se transforma? ¿no sera eso la verdad? es decir, todo, todos los fenomenos del universo estan sujetos a la forma como la energia se manifiesta, todos, por eso es mas factible entender que la religion (del latin religare que traduce re volver ligare union) es decir la union con todo, la intepretacion de ella misma y la forma como nosotros con las leyes del universo convivimos, sea un arte, que toda religion en su naturaleza lo que busca es llevar al hombre a un estado mas puro, mas humano, mas esencial y mas armonioso con todo lo que nos rodea y que la verdad sea en ella misma la forma como nosotros los hombre interpretamos los fenomenos, entendamos, especulemos y comprendamos el porque y recreamos dicho saber para hacer de ello una gama multicolor de ideas, de pensamientos, de culturas, donde el fin es tener el poder, el control, y la capacidad de entender todos los fenomenos que sucedes en el universo, y que nuestro pensamiento solo recree y construya e interprete como quiera dichos fenomenos, a veces dandole una razon logica matematica, o a veces dandole una validez juridica, cada ser hace de su vida una obra de arte. El bien y el mal, esta sujeto a la forma como el ser quiere vivir, sentir, y actuar, como experimentamos y sentimos nuestra realidad. Ni las leyes fisicas ni matematicas son extactas desde una perspectiva cuantica, entonces mucho menos seran las biologicas ni las sociales o economicas, a todo esto podemos decir que las leyes son acercamientos, cuyo fin es armonizar, con patrones que son equivalentes a este nivel de existencia, que de una u otra forma se van transformando, creciendo y madurando; el hombre tambien lo hace, y siempre con una perspectiva holistica, tanto de afuera como adentro, tanto expuesto a elementos que no estan en nuestro control, como a elementos y factores que podemos controlar, incluida la conciencia, los pensamientos y las ideas.

Podemos asegurar algo, todo esta sujeto a una equivalencia, a una probabilidad, a una determinada certeza, y como tal, lo exacto no existe, por ende, lo unico que podriamos decir que es exacto, es el factor unico y eterno que todo es energia, tanto el tiempo como el espacio, el resto son probabilidades, que a veces por el determinado numeros de sucesos que pasan, se convierte en verdades o en un determinado continuum que no esta excento a transformarse y cambiar.

Por eso, y para terminar esa seccion de ensayos, es menester tomar un principio de la fisica estadistica: «todo es posible, pero no todo es probable" es decir, en la vida, todo puede suceder, porque todo es energia, pero no todo es probable porque dicha energia se manifiesta y a veces dicha manifestacion toma un orden consecutivo, que vuelve la existencia mas frecuente y repetitiva por los sucesos similares y constantes que acotecen.
